Snorkelling with Whale Sharks

This amazing Belize itinerary is a great choice for anyone considering travelling to Belize in April, May or June. These are the months when the Whale Sharks come to Gladden Spit, an elbow in the reef off the Placencia coast, to feed on the Snapper spawn. The Whale Sharks are known to come several days after the full moon up until the last quarter moon. When these magnificent creatures are in a playful or curious mood they swim right up to the oceans surface and provide an incredible experience for snorkellers as well as scuba divers.

Gladden Spit is a dedicated marine reserve and boat numbers to the park are limited to protect these creatures. Whale Sharks are gentle giants and are the largest known fish on the planet, on average they grow up to 20 feet in length. They are filter feeders and pose less threat to humans than vice versa.

Day to Day

Below is an example day to day itinerary, days snorkelling the reef and with Whale Sharks will vary depending on weather and sightings.

Day 1

Fly from London to Houston, Texas with Continental Airlines. Overnight in Houston (Room only).

Day 2

Fly from Houston to Belize City. Transfer down to Placencia on the coast (approx. 30 mins). Met and transferred to Chabil Mar Villas (BB).

Day 3

At leisure, swim in infinity pools, relax on the private beach or stroll into Placencia town. Bicycles and sea canoes are available for unlimited use. Overnight at Chabil Mar Villas (BB).

Day 4

Day trip to Gladden Spit for guided snorkel with whale sharks (approx. 1 hour boat ride, lunch included). Overnight at Chabil Mar (BB)

Day 5

Full day guided snorkel tour to Cayes to explore marine life on the reef (lunch included), you will see an array of tropical fish and may also see Spotted Eagle Rays, Nurse Sharks and Turtles. Overnight at Chabil Mar (BB).

Day 6

At leisure, additional excursions could include searching for Manatees on the Placencia Lagoon or mainland daytrip to Mayan ruins or Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary. Overnight at Chabil Mar (BB).
